The Funen Painters: The famous Funen Painters

Our museum is named after one of the Funen Painters, Johannes Larsen, and we therefore have a natural connection to and interest in these well known artists. Here you can get an overview of the Funen Painters and the history behind them.

The Funen Painters

The following six painters are the most famous and most closely associated with the concept of The Funen Painters:

What does the term “The Funen Painters” refer to?

The Funen Painters is a nickname for a group of painters who were all based on Funen and primarily painted nature, flowers, and animals. Most of them attended the same art schools and had the same teacher. The school was Kunstnernes Frie Studieskoler, and the teacher was Kristian Zahrtmann, who became almost synonymous with the school.

The Funen Painters are often described as modern artists.

Who were The Funen Painters?

The names of The Funen Painters are many, but it is especially six Danish painters who are associated with the group. Those connected with The Funen Painters were either students of Zahrtmann or had ties to some of the most well-known of the painters.

The Funen Artists’ Colony

Because The Funen Painters were so closely connected both artistically and professionally, they are often described as part of the same Funen artists’ colony.

The Colony was interconnected in many ways – through friendships, family ties, and romantic relationships. They were close not only physically but also in terms of ideals and sources of inspiration. They shared many ideas about art, focusing on the immediate impression of nature, with light and weather as central elements in their paintings.

The Funen Painters’ connection to Kerteminde

The primary gathering place of the artists’ colony was in Kerteminde. It became so when Johannes and Alhed Larsen shose to settle at Møllebakken – the house that today forms the Johannes Larsen Museum.

Kerteminde is Johannes Larsen’s birthplace, and for that reason, among others, it was natural for him to settle there. The other artists fell in love with the town’s simplicity and its beautiful natural surroundings.
